Sophos outperforms both McAfee and Symantec

This Endpoint Security for Small Business comparative review by Cascadia Labs (November 2006) evaluated the three leading locally-managed endpoint security software packages designed for small businesses:

  • Sophos Computer Security SBE 2.0
  • McAfee Active VirusScan SMB Edition
  • Symantec Client Security 3.1

The Review
Cascadia Labs evaluated every aspect of endpoint security covering installation, deployment, usability, management, effectiveness of signature-based and behaviour-based malware detection, remote cleanup, scanning performance and updating.

The Ratings
Sophos clearly outperformed both Symantec and McAfee in the vast majority of areas. Ease of installation is essential for small businesses and Sophos installed on 10 endpoints in just 14 minutes, and 18 steps. By comparison the Symantec and McAfee solutions took more than 30 minutes and involved 104 and 45 steps respectively.

According to Cascadia Labs, Sophos also did a better job of stopping unknown or zero-day threats than both Symantec and McAfee using "the most effective desktop firewall in the review" and Behavioral Genotype Protection to block unknown attacks.

Cascadia Labs' verdict
"Sophos Computer Security SBE 2.0 stood out by clearly meeting the needs of small businesses."

"McAfee Active VirusScan SMB Edition did demonstrate some effective blocking capabilities but was substantially more challenging to install and manage than the Sophos product."

"Symantec Client Security 3.1 [was] essentially unsuitable for a small business environment because of its complex configuration requirements, lack of a dashboard containing actionable options, and poor performance when confronted with malware during a scan."
